BCS Course Patterns for Catalog Year 2011/12

Please note that the following grouping of courses into years is just a typical pattern for BCS students. You are permitted to take any course in any year of your program, as long as you have the prerequisites.

First Year

All BCS students

  • COMP 1405 — should be taken in the Fall term
  • COMP 1406 — should be taken in the Winter term
  • COMP 1805 — should be taken in the Winter term
  • MATH 1007
  • MATH 1104
  • Electives (normally full-time students choose enough electives to bring their total course load for the year to 5.0 credits)

Stream requirements

  • Game Development: COMP 1501
  • Software and Computing: no additional requirements
  • Software Engineering: no additional requirements
  • Management and Business Systems: BUSI 1003 (or BUSI 1001 plus BUSI 1002); ECON 1000
  • Computer and Internet Security: no additional requirements
  • Mobile Applications: COMP 1601
  • Network Computing: no additional requirements
  • Psychology: PSYC 1001, PSYCH 1002
  • Biomedical Computing: BIOL 1103, BIOL 1104, CHEM 1001, CHEM 1002

Second Year

All BCS students:

  • COMP 2003 — no longer offered, instead take any COMP 2000-level or above
  • COMP 2401 — normally taken in the Fall term; prerequisite for COMP 2404
  • COMP 2402
  • COMP 2404 — requires COMP 2401
  • COMP 2805 — renumbered to COMP 3803
  • STAT 2507 or STAT 2605 (Psychology and Business stream students must choose STAT 2507)
  • Honours only:
    • 0.5 credit in COMP at the 2000-level or above (except in the Game, Software Engineering, Mobile, Security, Network and Biomedical streams)
    • 0.5 credit in COMP or MATH at the 2000-level or above (except in the Game, Mobile, Security and Network streams)
    • one of MATH 2007, MATH 2107 or MATH 3101
  • Major only:
    • 1.0 credit in COMP or MATH at the 2000-level or above
    • 0.5 credit in MATH or STAT at the 2000-level or above
  • Electives (normally full-time students choose enough electives to bring their total course load for the year to 5.0 credits)

Stream requirements:

  • Game Development: COMP 2501
  • Software and Computing: no additional requirements
  • Software Engineering: COMP 2405 — no longer offered, take COMP 2406 instead
  • Management and Business Systems: BUSI 2300, BUSI 2101, BUSI 2503, STAT 2507 — BUSI 2300 no longer offered, take BUSI 2301 instead
  • Computer and Internet Security: COMP 2405 — no longer offered, take COMP 2406 instead
  • Mobile Applications: COMP 2601
  • Network Computing: COMP 2405 — no longer offered, take COMP 2406 instead
  • Psychology: PSYC 2001, PSYC 2100, PSYC 2700, PSYC 2800, STAT 2507
  • Biomedical Computing: BIOL 2104, BIOL 2600, CHEM 2203, CHEM 2204, BIOC 2200

Third Year

All BCS students:

  • COMP 3000
  • COMP 3004
  • COMP 3005
  • COMP 3007
  • Honours only:
  • Major only:
    • 1.0 credit in COMP at the 3000-level or above
  • Electives (normally full-time students choose enough electives to bring their total course load for the year to 5.0 credits)

  • Game Development: COMP 3501
  • Software and Computing: no additional requirements
  • Software Engineering: SYSC 3303
  • Management and Business Systems: BUSI 3402, 1.5 additional credit in BUSI at the 3000-level or above
  • Computer and Internet Security: COMP 3203
  • Mobile Applications: COMP 3601
  • Network Computing: COMP 3203
  • Psychology: PSYC 3102, PSYC 3105, PSYC 3702
  • Biomedical Computing: COMP 3308, BIOC 3101, one of BIOL 3104 or BIOL 3609

Fourth Year

All BCS students:

  • Honours only:
    • COMP 4905
    • 1.5 credits in COMP at the 4000-level, counting any 4000-level
    • COMP courses in the stream requirements below
  • Major only:
    • 0.5 credits in COMP at the 4000-level
  • Electives (normally full-time students choose enough electives to bring their total course load for the year to 5.0 credits)

Stream requirements:

  • Game Development: COMP 4501
  • Software and Computing: no additional requirements
  • Software Engineering: COMP 4004, SYSC 4106
  • Management and Business Systems: no additional requirements
  • Computer and Internet Security: COMP 4108, COMP 4109
  • Mobile Applications: COMP 4601
  • Network Computing: 1.0 credit from COMP 4001, COMP 4009, COMP 4104, COMP 4108, COMP 4203, COMP 4804
  • Psychology: PSYC 4800, PSYC 4805
  • Biomedical Computing: COMP 4804, one of COMP 4300 or COMP 4308
