Applicants are encouraged to review our research areas: SCS Research Areas Programs
These programs are managed by the School of Computer Science.
Admission Requirements and Application Procedure
The Graduate Calendars of the University of Ottawa and Carleton University specify the minimum admission requirements for Master's and Ph.D. programs in Computer Science. For joint program also visit OCICS web pages:
Master's in Computer Science
Minimum requirements are a 4-year (Honours) Bachelor in Computer Science or equivalent, with a "B" or higher average.
Ph.D. in Computer Science
A master's degree in Computer Science (with thesis or equivalent in terms of scholarly publications) with at least a "B+" average is normally required for admission into the PhD program. Students who are currently registered in the Master's program may, in exceptional cases be permitted to transfer into the PhD program if they have completed all course requirements with at least a "A-" (80-84%) average and demonstrate significant promise for advanced research. Application Deadlines
Check the graduate calendar: https://gsapplications.carleton.ca/deadlines.php International Students
International Students are those who need a student's visa to study in Canada. For more information please consult the Government of Canada web site. You can also contact the Canadian embassy, high commission or consulate responsible for your region. This Institute receives a large number of applications each year from well-qualified international students for an extremely limited number of positions. Only students in computer science who are in the top 5% of their graduating class and fulfilling all the admission requirements should consider applying. In addition, applicants to the Ph.D. program who have technical papers published in international journals or presented at international conferences, have a much better chance for admission than those applicants who do not have such evidence to indicate the quality of their Master's theses. An academic year starts in September with the Fall semester and students generally first register in the Fall semester. Applicants should note that, depending upon their country of application, it can take up to 6 months or more to obtain a student's visa to study in Canada which will not be issued without an official letter of acceptance from the university of the supervisor and evidence of adequate financial support. For registration in September, an application file should be complete by March 1st. Visa students studying in Ontario are charged tuition fees of approximately $19,000 per year (see Carleton University tuition fee page for more information). We estimate that a Visa student will need a minimum of $35,091 to $58,879 (Canadian funds) per annum to cover tuition and living expenses (Please see the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs’ web site for further information regarding costs). Visa students may work in Canada only as teaching and research assistants in the universities where they are enrolled. Language Requirements
You need to have a TOEFL score of 580 or equivalent. The TOEFL scores can be sent directly from the testing centre.
Students with lower scores may be admitted subject to having to successfully complete ESL Requirements. Admission with ESL requirements is not guaranteed. Note that the table below serves just as a guideline and is not binding.
