Interfacing a Wiki with Mapping Tools

For this project I am interested in exploring how tools like Google Earth and Google Maps can be used to augment the functionality of a wiki that deals with geographic data. In particular, I would like to see how a site like divespot.ca can be used effectively with these tools to offer an intuitive and useful interface over the geographic aspects of the data. I would like most of this to be done as a MediaWiki extension.
