An Indoor Navigation System via Augmented Reality

ABSTRACT

Any GPS (global positioning system) navigation device can receive a GPS signal and determine the present location of the device. Modern GPS navigation devices can even provide turn-by-turn directions from a source location to a given destination. This is an incredibly powerful service but it can only be taken advantage of outdoors, where GPS signals can be received. More often than not, people require directions when indoors. For instance, trying to locate a classroom in an unfamiliar building or finding the nearest fire exit. The research discussed in this paper describes a novel solution for implementing an Indoor Navigation System via Augmented Reality (INSAR). INSAR takes advantage of modern computer vision techniques to sense its current location and is able to direct the user to a selected destination through an augmented reality interface.
