Carleton University - School of Computer Science Undergraduate Honours Project Winter 2012 Scalability of Broadcast Messages in DSRC Vehicular Networks Austin Chamney
ABSTRACT Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) is a wireless communication channel designed to be used in vehicles. Lately, several ideas have been composed to use DSRC in vehicles for safety on public roads. Since little research has been done in this area, the scalability of the maximum number of vehicles before a significant performance drop of this network is unknown. The purpose of this project is to study the limitations of the DSRC network, and run simulations to find its benchmark throughput and scalability. The inspiration for this research came from a paper by C. Laurendeau and M. Barbeau detailing the security header for each message. The IEEE standard 1609.2 header size is 250 bytes, which is considerably large. The paper proposes a smaller header size of 127 bytes given a payload of 32 bytes, significantly decreasing the size of the message. What the paper does not detail is how this affects the performance of heartbeat messages for vehicles on highways. This paper compares the performance for different message sizes to find the optimal message size, and message sending interval for different traffic volumes. |
