Carleton University - School of Computer Science Undergraduate Honours Project Summer 2010 Crowdsourced Target Tracking Daniel Davidson
ABSTRACT Because users increasingly access social networking services from their Global Positioning System (GPS) enabled smartphones, these services are beginning to incorporate the location of the user. Often these location oriented features are very secondary to the social focus of the service. My goal for this project was to create a social network that revolved around the interesting events in proximity to the members of the network. The three components of the project are an Android application, a web client, and the back-end service. I successfully produced an Android application that can navigate a map, view and search points-of-interest (POI) that are loaded in near real-time, create tagged POI based on the user's geographic location, and conduct user-to-user messaging. I have a complimentary web client that can be used by desktop and smartphone users. I have deployed a web service that manages and serves-up POI and provides the backbone for user-to-user messaging. |
