The Aloural Language Project

Thomas McMahon

ABSTRACT

The Aloural Language project involves the creation and implementation of an artificial language designed to facilitate the translation of text between two natural languages. Given a block of text to translate, the system will convert the text into the Aloural language, and then into another natural language. By doing so, the system preempts the need for direct language-to-language binding, with each language of the system only needing to be bound to the Aloural language (linear amount instead of combinatorial). The main objectives of this project involve the resolution of various ambiguities present in natural language, in order to represent the information more explicitly in the Aloural language. Combined with a light amount of information extraction techniques, the system is capable of translating into and out of the Aloural language. The results are promising, and with a higher focus in information extraction and more domain knowledge of the specific natural languages, a more complete translation can be achieved. The languages used for this project are the English and Japanese languages, with a higher focus on the English side.
