Carleton University - School of Computer Science Undergraduate Honours Project Winter 2012 Image Component Recognition as a Usable Password Marek Menhart
ABSTRACT A graphical password framework was developed in which a user is asked to recognize image components, in contrast to existing frameworks in which a user is asked to recognize entire images. The main advantage of the new approach is that it is very difficult to obtain the user's password by observing or logging his actions, since it is not known to the attacker which of the many components that are part of the chosen image is actually the user's password. A usability study was conducted which showed that most participants had difficulty remembering their passwords. This indicates that although the proposal is promising in theory, further work needs to be done in order to make it usable in practice. |
