Carleton University - School of Computer Science Undergraduate Honours Project Summer 2011 Examining the Effects of Time Pressure in Role-Playing Games and Books Jeff Regis
ABSTRACT In role-playing games (RPGs), players are often given the luxury of proceeding through the game at their own pace. If the player was forced to finish within a certain time limit, the player's experience and enjoyment of the game would be subject to change. This project aims to model how various time limits imposed on RPGs affect the accessibility of a game's content. Brief time limits on games with few gameplay choices have the most negative effects on content accessibility while non-linear game paths suffer little to no negative effects, suggesting that time pressure is a gameplay mechanic that may work in non-linear RPGs without hindering the player's experience. |
