OCTranspoLive: A live OCTranspo GPS bus location application for the Android Platform

Rafik Rezzik

ABSTRACT

Getting around Ottawa using public transportation can be frustrating when you don't know if the buses will arrive at their scheduled time. In fact the buses often arrive early or late, and this means a poor experience for riders. With the release of live GPS bus locations by OCTranspo I proposed an Android application to make use the data. With the explosion in Android smartphone ownership over the last few years it makes an ideal platform to target. Along with iOS it will makes up the largest share of smartphones among riders. These modern smartphones provide location services through built-in GPS chips and can be used to provide the user with some location specific information such as the closest bus stops to them. The aim of the application was to provide the user with quick and accurate information about when the bus will actually arrive. Along with providing a table of estimated arrival times a map with next bus locations can be made for the user. With that problem and proposed application in mind, this paper will detail the implementation of the Android application developed for this project.
