Agent Behaviour in Real Time Strategy Games

David Sullivan

ABSTRACT

In real time strategy games the player is often forced to perform tedious micromanagement of their units. This micromanagement can be time consuming and frustrating for both novice and professional players. This system aims to demonstrate that this micromanagement can be reduced through group coordination and individual unit reactions. By reducing the required micromanagement the system allows the player to focus on higher level game decisions. While the actual benefits of the system were mixed, the performance cost was minimal, suggesting that with static cost benefit analysis and advanced heuristics the system could be expanded to quickly provided complex solutions to group coordination.
