SCS Student Computer Laboratories

Lab Basics

The SCS computer labs consist of standard Intel Pentium PC's that run a non-configurable Windows operating system. Non-configurable means that users cannot install any software on the computers using their accounts. All the software needed for the SCS courses is present on the systems. All lab users must create an SCS Windows Account using the online account creation system.

The fourth floor Computer Science Labs are covered by the CU Wireless Network - http://www2.carleton.ca/ccs/services/network-services/wireless-services/

Students have access to the Z-drive which is dedicated backed-up server space (hard disk quotas are in place). The Z-drive is accessible on all the SCS Vista lab systems and is a place where you can safely store your files. We recommend that users buy USB-drives (or pen-drives) and use it to store their personal data. USB-drives are fast, have large capacity (compared to the Z-drive), relatively in-expensive, and allow you to backup, carry and transfer your data to computers running virtually any operating system. If you require large 'fast' temporary space, while you are working in the labs, you can use the C:\temp directory.

Lab Policy

The SCS Lab Policy covers:

  • Prohibited Expressions
  • Prohibited Conduct
  • Prohibited Food/Drinks
  • Lab Access
  • Other Policies

Linux Emulator

There sre 16 linux machines available for student use. The SCS linux Network or Lambda Network is available remotely by using the linux emulation software called Xming. The SCS Windows lab machines are setup with Xming that connect directly to the lambda network. Once connected you will have a choice of any of the 16 lambda hosts.

In order for you to access the SCS linux network you must have one of the following:

  • Taking a course that requires linux
  • Be a B.C.S. student
  • Be a graduate student

Campus Card Access

 Campus Card Access Reader

The School of Computer Science has switched to Campus Card Access. This means that you can use your Campus Card to enter the labs 1).

Your lab access is based on the program and course that you are currently enrolled in. For example, if you are enrolled in COMP3004 in the fall term then your access for the lab will commence on the first day of the fall term and end at the last day of the fall term.

Please consult the Lab Access Schedule to see what labs you have access to.

For problems concerning the Campus Card Access system please contact the SCS Technical Staff.

Hours of Operation

The labs are open 24 hrs/day 7 days per week. Please note that the Herzberg building hours are limited (8 a.m. - 11 p.m. Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. Saturday, closed during the holidays). Please make sure to read the motd (message of the day) and pay attention to the lab-posters for lab closure information between academic terms.

SCS Help Desk

The SCS Help Desk is located in room 5161HP and can be used for account and lab problems only. The SCS help desk is open during regular business hours: Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. - noon, and 1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
