New SCS Accounts

You need a new SCS account! CCS MyCarletonOne accounts are changing that means SCS account names are changing too!

Who is affected?

All SCS students that have accounts prior to June 1, 2012.

An easy way to tell that you have an old account is if your account name is 8 characters long or less. The format use to be first character of your first name and 7 characters or less of your last name.

What do I need to do?

  1. Create a new SCS account: Account Creation

After creating the new account your SCS account name should be the same as your MyCarletonOne account name.

After following those steps you will have two SCS accounts.

What happens to my old account?

SCS will keep both accounts for you. At one point the old 8-character (or less) named account will be de-activated that means you will need to transition your data from your old SCS account to your new SCS account.

Transitioning Accounts

If you wish to save any data located on your old account you will need to move this data to the new account.

At SCS we offer a number of accounts and they can be transitioned as follows:

Windows

  1. Log into your old SCS account
  2. Copy files from your Z: to your USB drive and logout
  3. Log into your new SCS account
  4. Copy files from your USB to the new account

After you have copied your data to your new account make sure that all your files are there and are accessible

Linux

You can copy files from account A to an account B as follows:

  1. ssh access.scs.carleton.ca -l accountA
  2. scp my_file accountB@access:my_destination

You can handle copying many files as follows:

  • use the tar command to archive a directory and then copy the archive over
  • or, on a lambda machine you can run gftp and copy files
  • or, on a windows machine you can use winscp to backup your files from 'old_account' and then restore them to 'new_account'

If you want to backup your files from home use the external access host access.scs.carleton.ca

Email

If you have an SCS email account we recommend the following:

  1. log into your old linux account and save your inbox to a folder
  2. setup a .forward from your old account to your new account
  3. copy your mail folder to your new account
