SCS Linux/Zeta Account Upgrade

There are some exciting changes happening at SCS concerning the Linux network. The technical staff are in the process of upgrading:

  • the file server (more space for users!)
  • moving from Fedora (zeta network) to Ubuntu (lambda network)
  • a new web server for user home directories (people.scs.carleton.ca)

quest is no longer accessible from outside of SCS. If you require to access your old account you can ssh to access and then from access ssh to quest.

zeta01 and zeta03-16 have been shutdown indefinitely to make room for the ubuntu/lambda's. Sixteen lambda's lambda01-16 are now online.

In order to facilitate the changes all users will need to create a new account on the new server. Documentation will become available on how to move files from your old account.

Instructions on how to create a new Linux account

The new linux network is not operational at this time (it will available during the week of Sep. 21, 2009). However you can already create an account and use the new email server.

  1. Log into access to verify that your account has been created
  2. Log into your email account to verify email is active

Changing your password

You can easily change your SCS password by logging into access.scs.carleton.ca and executig the 'passwd' command.

Copying files from your old linux account to your new linux account via the command line

Once you created a new linux account and you can login via access.scs.carleton.ca you can transfer your files as follows (using the command line). This will copy an entire directory for user 'jdoe':

ssh access.scs.carleton.ca -l jdoe
scp -r jdoe@quest:~/<my_dir> .

Remember 'jdoe' is your username and <my_dir> is a directory that you want to copy. The '.' denotes the current directory but you can specify any destination directory that you like.

If you have large files that you do not use often please back them up and delete them before copying your files.

If you want to copy everything from your old account:

ssh access.scs.carleton.ca -l jdoe
mkdir old_files
cd old_files
scp -r jdoe@quest:~ .

Winscp

WinSCP is an open source free SFTP client and FTP client for Windows. Its main function is safe copying of files between a local and a remote computer. This is a good way for you to transfer files to and from your linux account.

Download the latest version of winscp and give it a try:

Zeta/Fedora Network Status

The Zeta/Fedora network is being dismantled and being replaced with Lambda/Ubuntu.

zeta01,zeta03-16 have been shutdown.

The zeta's are no longer accessible through xwin32 from the labs. For a limited time zeta02 is still accessible (internally only).

Lambda/Ubuntu Network Status

The lambda network is running Ubuntu 9.04. The following lambda's are accessible as of Wednesday Feb. 3, 2010 at 12:58 p.m.:

  1. lambda01
  2. lambda02
  3. lambda03
  4. lambda04
  5. lambda05
  6. lambda06
  7. lambda07
  8. lambda08
  9. lambda09
  10. lambda10
  11. lambda11
  12. lambda12
  13. lambda14
  14. lambda16

Three more lambda's have come online (Oct. 28, 2009):

  1. lambda17
  2. lambda18
  3. lambda19

They are multicore lambda's running CUDA software for the use by the course COMP 40091)

You can get graphical access to them from the SCS Vista Labs using the xwin32 emmulator. 2)

Remote access to the lambda's is possible through the external gateway called access.scs.carleton.ca

This is a new setup, if you see any problems or if you like some software that is not currently installed on the system, contact supportscs.carleton.ca

1) COMP 4009 is offered in the fall 2009 term
2) Note that lambda17-19 only have console access
