ABSTRACT Ad hoc networks are used widely in many environments which require various key management schemes to provide security services. Mobile nodes in these networks are usually formed in clusters to reduce topology control messages exchanged. There are many key management schemes proposed to provide the security in this networks. Such as various symmetric key schemes, distributed Certificate-based asymmetric key scheme combined with threshold cryptography to secure the distributed certificate authorities. The challenge with key management on ad hoc networks is the need to update the keys during node joining or leaving in order to maintain the backward and forward secrecy.
However, all the existing key schemes assumes a flat ad hoc networks, which is not feasible in Hierarchical Ad Hoc Networks. A new cluster key management Hierarchical Ad Hoc Networks is proposed in this presentation, by using the new cluster key scheme, we will be able to broadcast the cluster key using one encryption and there is also mechanism to update the clusters keys to maintain backward and forward secrecy during nodes joining and leaving.
