ABSTRACT With the student population across Canada becoming increasingly diverse, a top priority of education should be supporting English language learners in content-based classrooms. In addition to challenges associated with improving their general language proficiency, these students often face problems in coping with the specific language requirements of different subject areas (domain-specific terminology), which may in turn lead to their low achievement in various academic courses. There is general consensus that a key component of language proficiency and successful learning is the knowledge of the domain specific terms (words and multi-word expressions) for each specific domain of study. Here we will experiment with a corpus of five math textbooks prepared for a pilot study in automatic term extraction (high school math textbooks for grades 9 to 12). A manual expected solution will be built in order to evaluate the correctness of the automatically extracted terms and provided software tool for extracting those terms and discuss the experiments and results achieved by this comparison. |
