Usability Analysis of reCaptcha and ESP-PIX on Smartphones and Laptops
Speaker: Medha Vasanth

Location: 240 TB (Tory Building)
ABSTRACT

Captchas are a widely used security mechanism to distinguish between computers and humans. In this talk I will present a usability analysis of textual and graphical captchas on laptops and smartphones. The usability analysis was conformed through a user study at Carleton University. The captchas under consideration here are re-Captcha and ESP-PIX and designed and implemented in the website www.captcha.net. The study was conducted in three phases, with the participants using the captchas on the two devices in the first two phases; the study was then completed with a follow-up questionnaire in the last phase of the study. The study was a minimal risk study conducted with five participants from Carleton University’s Computational Geometry Lab. Although the captchas for laptops outperform the same captchas for smartphones, the general response is that re-Captcha is the preferred captcha for laptops while ESP-PIX is preferred for smartphones.
