As stated on the open source organizations home page (http://www.opensource.org/), open source software is the idea that when programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing. There is great potential for using and helping others to incorporate open source software into their projects and applications. Research in this area focuses on a number technological and social issues and the development of tools, techniques, and software that others can freely use and extend. It includes domain areas such as pervasive computing, embedded computing, RFID, web programming and platforms such as Eclipse.
